Sheppard Park
Jones Landscape Architecture served as project landscape architect for the design and construction administration of the Sheppard Park Sprayground and Restroom project in Louisville's Russell neighborhood. This project was funded in part by Federal HUD grant, and in part by the Vision Russell Initiative of the Louisville Housing Authority in Louisville, Kentucky. Sheppard Park is named after prominent African American missionary, pastor and human rights activist, William Henry Sheppard. The design team and Jones Landscape Architecture wanted the park design to reflect the colorful patterns found in Congo art in which Sheppard brought home from his travels. The design team provided conceptual site plan alternatives for the park area which includes a new restroom with mechanical room, a colorful Congo-themed sprayground, new swings, musical drum, interpretive sign that displays the park history and walking loop featuring animals of the Congo. A public meeting - Open House was held to introduce the conceptual site plan to the neighborhood and accept public comments and input. The team then further developed the design for the sprayground and restroom for the park with thorough construction documentation and construction administration. This project was completed in 2018.
